Rich, you might give lacquer thinner a try. I have used it quit effectively to remove paint and finish from both metal and stocks. It cuts just about everything and in my experience doesn't harm either wood or metal. You need to apply the proper oils afterward. I find that boiled linseed oil works well for stocks.
