Re: 1873 /1884

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Thursday, 27 March 2014, at 11:47 a.m., in response to 1873 /1884, posted by Richard Freeman on Thursday, 27 March 2014, at 8:07 a.m.

There is absolutely ZERO physical difference in the block after 96300, other than the marking.

The model designation was changed in 1884 with the adoption of the new rear sight, but the existing store of 1873 marked blocks was used to exhaustion, circa 1887.

So, your block has been replaced - but, if you wish to replace it, a suitable (better-matching?) 1884 block should be easy to find.

The really good news is that the number appears to be in the range of the last block of 5000 carbines made in 1889 (not 1890). My own specimen is 452770.
