letter marking on front of trigger guard

Posted by Tom B on Monday, 24 March 2014, at 9:11 a.m.

I am in the process of negotiating a price on a mint 1884 Springfield (1889). There is a "M" marking at the front of the trigger guard by the swivel and a matching "M" in the stock behind the trigger guard. Does anyone know what this means and is it correct?
