Model 1873 rifle .45-70

Posted by Chris Storace on Saturday, 22 March 2014, at 9:38 p.m.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Today at an auction I came into possession of a Model 1873 rifle .45-70 s/n 58689 with the stamp 43 M just forward of the breechblock. Can anyone tell me what this 43 M signifies, if the weapon was made in 1876, and where I might be able to learn its history? I would also like to bring it in and have a professional assess its NRA rating.

Again, thank you.
