Alleged Unit Markings

Posted by John Vagnetti on Thursday, 20 March 2014, at 1:15 p.m.

I recently acquired a very nice starred carbine cartouched SWP over 1881. This arm has Co C 9 hand stamped in the butt plate just to the left of the tool/cleaning rod compartment. The cavalry didn't officially change unit designations from company to troop until Sept. 3, 1883; so I guess it is possible that the marking is legitimate, but I have my doubts. I also know that authentic unit markings are very rare, especially on carbines.

Having said all of that, I was wondering if anyone out there has seen similar or identical markings in same location on other arms. Does anyone know of official documentation regarding unit marking on U.S. Government arms.
