Re: Need help with identification specifics

The "trapdoor piece" IS the breechblock, and it should be marked US/Model 1873, or US/Model/1884. The serial number is on the upper rear edge of the part known as the "receiver". A "C" on the barrel MIGHT indicate "condemned" - in the area you describe, the marks should read "V, P, e/h, P" (perhaps the C is a partially struck "P".

Nominally, it would be considered a Model 1884 rifle, regardless of block marking. The sight is interesting - assuming it is long and flat, there should be two knobs at the front, one knob at the rear would be unusual. Are the screws which hold the sight to the barrel slotted or slotless? I'd be interested in seeing good pictures (richardahosmerATcomcastDOTnet). Perhaps I can give you more info.

As to cleanup, I'd leave it strictly alone, unless there is active fuzzy red rust. If so, wipe it with an oily rag.
