Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number

Posted by Mark Jones on Monday, 3 March 2014, at 2:01 a.m.

I have a trapdoor rifle Serial # 185640 The top of trapdoor is marked US Model 1884 The cartouche is stamped SWP 1889 There is a small capital T stamped in the wood to the rear of the lower tang and about an inch farther toward the butt of the rifle there is a larger scrollwork capital P with an oval circle around it The barrel band by the buffington sight has a capital U stamped on the hammer side of the rifle. The case colors are very good on both the trapdoor and the upper tang by the hammer. The side plate of the rifle by the hammer is stamped U.S. Springfield and has the Eagle holding the arrows. This gun is in excellent condition, both metal and wood. Frankly the rifle appears to be unused. It also has the cleaning rod, 2 sling hangers on the front barrel band and 1 sling hanger on the trigger guard. The lines in the upper section and the grid pattern on the bottom of the trigger are like new. Can you tell me any more about the rifle ?
