Re: 1873 cleaning rod

I have a similar issue... I am interested in "defarbing" an H&R "1873" repro rifle. It is NOT their Officer version. There are a lot of issues with it, but the most obvious is the cleaning rod. However, the 1884 type rod that came with it is only 33" long. The OA length is 51" rather than 52". It does seem to be a rifle copy rather than a cadet type. There is no cleanout under the trigger guard. No one seems to know how to extend the small cleaning rod hole in the stock. I have not tried the long screw idea yet (no local store has one small and long enough). Any ideas, or am I going to have to shorten a proper rod? Thanks!
