M1870 Carbine Serialized Barrel

Posted by Lee T. on Saturday, 22 February 2014, at 2:33 p.m.

Hi All, Just returned from a small local show where several old time friends / collectors always have tables. A guy I've known for about 20 years, who like me knows a little about a lot of things, had a 50-70 carbine that caught my eye. He said "OK Lee, let's see how much you know about Trapdoors!"

First quick once-over - long wrist stock, 1870 receiver, 1863 lockplate, really nice case colors and probable reblue all over.....whoops! Sling swivel on the TG, and, ummm, Where's the SN? The top of the back-breech had no trace of one.

He said look on the side of the barrel.....well yeah there's a 2800, and adjacent to it on the receiver, another 2800. He claimed SA had serialized 3000 barrels/receivers like that. Not knowing a whole lot about M1870's I just replied Huh! Really!?

Oh - he did say the stock wasn't original, that he used it because it was about the right vintage, so I'm only asking about the barrel/receiver combination. Is my friend correct or is this a bubba? Thanks, lee
