While the RGS cartouche might be an interesting tidbit, nobody puts an 1884 plate on a gun to enhance it, so, the arm WAS likely built of parts, post service, and just happens to have the off-beat cartouche. In other words, it is most likely not a "rare" piece which could be "made right" simply by swapping in an SA lockplate.

That said, I've not seen the gun, and too, one must take the asking price into account. If it is reasonable, and you like it, little harm is done - but I surely wouldn't pay a premium for what you have described so far. But, I'd be most happy to review any pictures you may want to email.
