Most authors have an ax to grind. At the time, there were the GAC worshippers, and the GAC haters, then, more recently we have the (sometimes overly PC) Indian glorifiers.
It's a complex story, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Ongoing animosity, and the social mores of the times hindered access to the people who really knew, until it was long past the fact.
We probably have a pretty fair idea of what happenned to Benteen and Reno, though that narrative was also fraught with the afore-mentioned axes being sharpened. While Benteen seems to have been respected, Reno certainly had his backers and detractors.
