Thanks Tom - didn't mean to hijack the thread. Checking Dick's Picture Trail, his 45-70-405 has a 1330 stamping. I have a box of R-F-5-78 IP with no stamp (rubbed off?), also an unstamped box of R-L-8-78 CF, like Dick's a Frazier Patent.
So it seems the difference is about 200 fps - the difference between a whomp! and a WHOMP! I imagine a trooper with a carbine would feel that after a couple dozen rounds, thus the change!
As an aside, the Black Hills cowboy rounds that I shoot now and then are right in between, listed at 1250. I'm not sure if they are smokeless but they make a fairly good cloud out of the muzzle.
