"Hotchkiss Carbine" sight on Gunbroker

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Wednesday, 12 February 2014, at 10:23 a.m.

As per the wanted list, I am looking for a rear sight for my 1st Model Hotchkiss carbine, and thought I had found one a couple of days ago. After consulting with a couple of good friends, and comparing it with the proper sight on my 2nd Model, it is apparent that the item is a fake. I have NO reason whatsoever to believe that the seller is complicit, but he has been notified, so we will see what happens.

The base appears to be reworked from that of a common trapdoor carbine, by removing the 7 and 8, and stamping HC on the side. Giveaway is the erroneous spacing of the 6 (too far from the edge) and the way-too-small gap between the 1 and 2, when compared to a genuine sight. The ladder is completely wrong - evidently the faker did not know that the Hotchkiss part goes to 14, not 15, and should not be marked C.

Just an illustration of what can be found out there. At first blush, the item really looked good.

Bottom line - I'm still looking. HELP!!!!
