I have heard of a nearby VFW or American Legion post which had '03's for its honor guard until WWII ensued. Then, the army, in dire need of rifles, reclaimed them and issued six or seven .45-70's and one .50-70. To this day, they have them and won't part with them. I heard this from a retired USAF major/electronic warfare officer (backseater), who is a post member and avid shooter of surplus weapons. So, in a sense, these old warhorses are still on duty and government property, after some 70 years.
