Well, all else aside, right out of the gate you have a serious mismatch with serial number and stock date. 156581 (is there a star after the number?) dates from 1881. Also, all numbers for a long way on both sides of that number are shown to be rifles - so it would seem that the piece is probably not an original carbine. It might - but only if it has the star - be one of the arms noted in FAQ 8, but with a later replaced stock. Would pretty well need to see pictures - cannot post them here, but I'd be happy to review any that were emailed to me. BTW, the band "U" goes on the hammer side of the gun - they are tapered and it will fit better the correct way.
