Michael, congratulations on your find and indeed, you certainly got a deal. Like you, I collect Indian War weapons and finally completed my collection of every type of U.S. marked weapon, issued to post Civil War soldiers. My 4 digit U.S. Colt was found on the west coast in Oregon (purchased from Al Perry, long time collector & acting as broker for the collection)) about 10 years ago and came from an old collection of U.S. Colts. My one regret is that I didn't borrow money to purchase the remaining Colts, considering what 4 digit Colts bring these days. Although I am proud of my other U.S. marked weapons, the Colt is prominently displayed along with my serial # 21862 Springfield carbine. It took me almost a life time to complete the collection but I did it.
