1st 1873 Trapdoor rifle a couple questions

Posted by Jeff Padell on Saturday, 4 January 2014, at 9:04 p.m.

I just picked up my first 1873 Trapdoor rifle, it is serial number 7964 so I think it was made around 1875, it appears all correct and came with the correct bayonet (no scabbard) I am cleaning the barrel it looks rough but seems to have some sort of cosmoline in it and may clean up ok, the seller said that it was his Great Grandfathers gun but didn't know if he carried it in the Army when he was in in the 1880-90's or bought it then.

Anyhow about 20 years ago the stock was refinished, you get a hint of a circle P but the cartouche on the left side of the stock appears to be gone.

The other thing I noticed is that it has a Buffington sight on it. I have to assume that was a later switch?

Are we allowed to post pictures on these posts?
