Actually there were four .50-55 carbines on trial, the Allin, Remington, Sharps, and Ward-Burton, though "your" unit apparently had none of the latter. Approx. 300 of each were made. The Allin and Ward-Burton can be found, the Remington is VERY rare, and the Sharps is non-existant (all are believed to have been rebuilt as sporting/hunting arms). The Allin, of course, became the Model 1870 trapdoor. 1000 rifles of each design were also made.
