Thanks for your response Allen. I had read this before at some point the there were no 1878 models. I went back and looked at it and i see it is a 3. My uncle owned this and my aunt gave this gun to me a couple of weeks ago and he had it marked 1878 and i can see why. It is very difficult to tell what the number is. He was very big into guns but he did not have todays resourses to see what was going on. I did find the serial number, it is 25285. How do i go about finding any info on this gun? There are markings on the stock that are also intersting. Toward the back of the stock by the butt plate on the left side there is this number (.2.). There is also some kind of an insignia on the opposite side of the hammer that i cannot make out. Is this anything you are familiar with? This particular gun has a peep sight mounted to the stock right behind the hammer. Do you know if this would have been an add on?
