Blood, sweat, tears, dried crud, excessive heat, passivated rust, who knows? Technical questions we can answer - but completely subjective items like this, with no picture, really get into the crystal ball arena. If the sight has possibly never been off (unslotted screws?) it could be the remains of original finish, and what you see around it - and think is normal - might not be.
