Re: Springfield 1873

The "date stamp" is the Cartouche on the left side of the rifle. The stamp on the breech block is the Model number. There were only two (2) dates applied to the breech blocks: 1873 & 1884. The "hard stamp" blocks will appear to have an 8 that is indeed a 3.

There is no way of knowing if or when any random rifle was rebuilt unless it shows up in the records for that particular serial number. Guns got repaired in the field but it was assumed that they would be returned the the Armory for repairs or rebuilding.
