recovering serial numbers

Posted by John on Thursday, 10 October 2013, at 6:00 p.m.

My late friend, Art Gogan, wrote the book "Fighting Iron" published by Mowbray which discussed all sorts of metallurgy even remotely related to stuff arms collectors are interested in. Art was a sophisticated collector, and a professional in the metallurgy inspection field.

His book includes detailed instructions for the process used by some crime labs to recover removed serial numbers. It works, and I have used it a couple of times. There may be other options, and places selling kits to professionals, but this is within the scope of things an average collector can do. The hardest part is finding a source for acids needed.

A copy of his instructions are posted at oldguns.net/crimelab.pdf and you can download them for future use.
