That's the remains of a "P" that should not be on a barrel that was original to the gun. Also disturbing are what looks like possible lathe turning marks. The fakers used to be content with simply cutting rifle barrels to 22". Later on, they discovered that the rubes had gotten smarter and the practice of re-tapering arrived on the scene. I'm not sure, but that barrel MAY have been messed with. Would have to see good pics (like the last one, not the first bunch) of the muzzle and front sight, and even then I probably couldn't be sure.

I have nothing on that number, but 41124 and 41153 are known carbines.

It's in awfully nice condition to have seen frontier service. They got pretty chewed up on campaign.
