1873 Springfield receiver

Posted by CMHouchins on Thursday, 5 September 2013, at 11:51 p.m.

Hello, I have an 1873 Springfield rifle that was given to me by my wife when we got married. It has been passed down thru her family. A beautiful almost complete piece only missing the slide on the rear sight and I also have the bayonet with it as well. Now comes my question.I have dated it to mid 1875 production. On the left side of the receiver right underneath the breech block just back from where the rimm of the cartridge would fit flush is a small crack in the receiver. Is it possible to clean this out and slowly and cooly weld this up to where it can be fired again. I would love to shoot this rifle occasionaly. Thanks
