Well, I took the plunge. It's in transit - we'll see; keeping fingers crossed! Only took it by $6, so I wasn't the only one who liked it.

Etchings vary somewhat on the specimens I viewed (isn't Google/Bing wonderful?) - what I finally keyed on was the grip - it APPEARS that the lighter ones with fewer and shallower ridges are the right ones. Even found a contemporary photograph, which clarified the grip.

Every specimen with the more defined grip also seemed to have other issues. Dixie's repro is awful, but at least they were kind enough to put an extra band in the etching, which no burying in the manure pile (supposedly the standard aging process on faked "Mills" belt buckles) for a couple of months will fix.
