1884 Carbine

Posted by Steve Garrison on Monday, 19 August 2013, at 3:40 p.m.

Questions: I wonder if my carbine is functional? The hammer seems to fall against the breech block and there is a recess in the block where the hammer falls and there is something in that recess but it is not at the level of the striking surface where the hammer falls. (It seems to be recessed about 1/8 inch - although it will slide back when tilted to where it could be struck by the hammer) I do see what seems to be a firing pin in the trap door mechanism and it is loose and to the left of the surface where the hammer falls.

I am unable to understand how the fall of the hammer would drive the firing pin with this arrangement. I'm speculating that there may be missing parts such that seating the trapdoor would expose the hammer pin and striking the hammer pin would link to drive the firing pin. My guess is I may have missing parts or it is assembled incorrectly. Could someone explain this to me or point me to a schematic and more explanation?
