500 grain bullet rings

Posted by frontierwest on Monday, 19 August 2013, at 1:47 p.m.

recently recovered a two ring 500 grain govt. contract bullet. The top grease groove and or rings are spaced exactly like the three ring, but the top ring is not there creating a large grease pocket. as opposed to the typical 3 ring grease grooves of the standard 500 grain bullet. It has the govt. dimple in the bottom/base and could have happened...

1. A soldier carved off the top ring (if so he did one hell of a job).

2. Some variant I've never seen? Could the LR program have produced something like that?

It looks like it was never fired as I do not see any rifiling marks on it.

Thanks for any imput.

John
