Tumbler threads

Posted by Steve Blancard on Friday, 5 July 2013, at 3:01 p.m.

My 1884 rifle had a broken half cock notch so I got a nice used original tumbler to replace it with. I noticed the hammer screw is very tight screwing into the new tumbler. I didn't have this problem with the broken tumbler. I tried a different screw out of another musket and it feels the same way. Looking with a magnifier at the tumbler's threads, they look fine. When trying the screw, it doesn't seem to get progressively harder to turn, which might indicate the wrong pitch. It almost seems like the threads are just a little undersize in the tumbler. I'm reluctant to apply to much force. What do you guys think?
