Carbine markings

Posted by Rob French on Friday, 28 June 2013, at 1:07 a.m.

My father has an 1884 trapdoor carbine that was bought in Australia in the late 70's. All the markings and condition look pretty normal and correct, except that there is a barrel marking I cannot find a reference to. It has the standard VP eagle head, then what looks like a capital J below the eagle head. The carbine supposedly came from Turkey before it found its way to Australia. Can anyone tell me what the J marking is? Thanks for your help.
