Re: M1880 iron guard

Knife and scabbard (Ebay 350810804402, under sold auctions) arrived today.

Scabbard is every bit as fragile as it appears, but now I finally have an example of the Varney type.

The big surprise is the knife itself. Aside from the truly awful nicks, it is almost "new". Believe it or not, it has never even been sharpened! I was expecting huge (and deep) rotten pits, but it is mostly just stained - the polish (when viewed against a light) is nearly flawless, they must have used a "light tent" which killed ALL of the luster, and accentuated the black spots. Might be of interest to the amateur photographers amongst us.

So, I may be re-thinking my plans - should have waited - will likely still be selling a knife and scabbard, but it just may be one of my brass guards!
