Model 1884 Stock Markings

Posted by John O'Shea on Sunday, 16 June 2013, at 3:39 p.m.

I recently acquired a Springfield Trapdoor Model 1884 (serial #489XXX indicating 1890 mfrg.) There is a number "11" stamped into the top of the stock near the butt plate. I assumed that this was just a rack number for arms room accountability. Is there any other possible explanation (i.e. military unit identifier or something related to the manufacture)?? Any info that you can provide will be appreciated.
