With the COMPLETE serial number the date can be nailed down. Springfield Armory NEVER had serial numbers with X's in them.

The stock was probably replaced during refit for the SAW.

NEVER shoot ammunition designed for "Modern" firearms in your Trapdoor. Black Powder loads are the best bet. You really can not overload smokeless powder in the 45-70 case. There's only so much room for the powder. There are many loads using Smokeless powder out there but care must be taken when using Smokeless. I have my "pet" loads with smokeless, but they are on the light side.

Ammunition for "Cowboy Action" is generally safe for the TD. If it don't say it's safe, It's not!
