Safe to shoot?

Posted by Dave S on Monday, 10 June 2013, at 8:50 p.m.

I recently acquired a Springfield M1884 Trapdoor, s/n 371XX. Mechanically, it appears to be in very good condition with a clean bore, although it does not appear to have an original stock (no cartouches that I can see). Two questions... a. Can the date of manufacture be determined & b. can it safely be fired with current commercial .47-70 ammunition?
