Re: 1877 and other production dates/numbers

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Sunday, 2 June 2013, at 10:18 p.m., in response to 1877 and other production dates/numbers, posted by George Bickel on Sunday, 2 June 2013, at 6:47 p.m.

Several things happened that year. The Army appropriations bill failed to pass Congress, and SA actually ceased production for a while. Also, they changed the accounting method from calendar to fiscal, AND, that was the period that the cartouches began to be dated, AND, there also seems to be the case of not changing the date until the die wore out. I have made some generalizations, to provide a quick answer, and will leave the specifics to others, but you have hit the nail on the head. 1877 was NOT your ordinary year.
