This was my response to Jim after he sent me the pics:
Hmmmm. I can definitely make out what looks like an "F" at about 3 o'clock, but if that is what I see it would be incorrectly oriented. We're looking for an "R" at 12, an "F" at 6, and numbers at 9 and 3 (always 2 digits). Knowing that it is a quadrinomial HS, once you find one character, you know where to concentrate your other inspections. I'm guessing it is a mortal sin to clean such items? :-)
From other characteristics, my opinion at this point would be that it likely is an FA .45-80. Think that bash-mark could be from the ejector stud? Primer looks odd - rotting away internally?
