I think you might be confusing the 1870 "trials model" rifles made with a Remington rolling block action where the U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1870 are stamped on the right side of the receiver. The Trapdoor rifles (1868 and 1870) had these markings on the flip up breech block, and a surplus Civil War era lock on the right side.
