I did a college paper along these lines. I guess I missed back then, the idea that there was some sort of disease that also could have contributed to their downfall. My focus was the Indian trade and their quest for the Gun, that help to contribute the downfall of the Bison. The gun trade went up to as much as 20 buffalo robes for a gun and the same amount for a box of cartridges. This is not talked about in the article, that the added pressure above the norm. also contributed. My professor who was native American refused to accept this point and gave me I think like a D minus! More to prove a point to me I think!

X buffalo robes a year for clothing Y buffalo hides a year for lodging Z buffalo hides a year for other purposes

Traditionally no factor for the influx of "Z" when everything was plentiful and no concept of depletion.. so multiply those numbers by Indians wanting to get a gun and ammo X a 20-30 year time period (1860-1880).

Any how the numbers were crunched and it too played a part regardless what one wants to believe.
