Speaking of books on the subject, I highly recommend Hackely, Woodin & Scrantion's "History of Modern U.S. Military Small Arms Ammunition." Volume 1 covers the period 1880-1940, and volume 2 covers 1941-45. Volume three is in final edit, but I am not sure of the exact dates it will cover.

HWS gets into the details of all U.S. military small arms ammo (.22 rimfire up to .60 caliber, made during the respective periods. Not just the standardized and issued items, but also the experimental and developmental versions. Everything is thoroughly researched and documented from primary sources and actual examples. Superb detailed drawings are provided, along with photos of many box labels.

For contract ammunition they usually provide details of the date, quantity, amount actually delivered, headstamps, etc.

HIGHLY recommended!!!! Volume 1 is available in the original edition and a revised second edition, and either will do for our era.
