John, They PRESUME based on the serial number 18087 that its 7th. cav. Well a quick look at the records indicates that serial number 18089 also a carbine was with the 10 cav. at Fort Concho Texas on 5-16-1876. So it might well be a 10th. Cav. as a 7th.. So I say it was with Lt. Flipper at the Rattlesnake Spring fight with the Apaches. Who is right?? We will never know. I also PRESUME based on the looks of the carbine stock someone wore out many sheets of sandpaper to take that much wood off the stock to ruin it.
