I know what you mean about a non-informative letter.

My Krag carbine came back as being reblued at St.Louis in June 1900, presumably on its' way to San Francisco. BFD. I used to joke about it, and in those days letters were only $25. But, the troop commander's name stuck in my mind.

Years later I was reading Gen. Chaffee's after-action report of the Peking Relief expedition, and guess whose name popped up. Same troop, too, and dates/timing/geography all fit perfectly. Now, BIG FD! Not a Rough Rider, but argueably a pretty close second.

So, you never know.
