Why can''t idiots load properly?

Posted by Stephen B. McCartney on Sunday, 22 July 2012, at 2:11 p.m.

Long before I learned the period manual for the Springfield I knew enough to drop the muszzle to load a round into the chamber. Time after time I see videos showing shooters keeping the muzzle level (at best) and having to bandy about while pushing the breech- block forward, again, before closing it. One would expect that after a time or two of this the shooter would figure out gravity and the naturalness of pointing the end where the bullet comes out down towards the ground. Reminds me of those who take lever action and bolt action firearms off their shoulders when recharging their weapons with the next round. A real (self) killer in combat and a time killer in timed matches. At least Australian movies (Gallipoli, The Light Horsemen, etc.) don't make these mistakes. Also, pushing down on the cam latch to close the Allin breech is a no-no as it does not properly engage the locking system-so I was taught by wise NPS mentors.
