Built from parts Trapdoor

Posted by SDScarlett on Saturday, 21 July 2012, at 9:38 p.m.

Hello; Many years ago I bought a 1873 trapdoor. At least that is what is on the trapdoor. However a 45-70 round will drop down the muzzle till it sets on the rim. A 50-70 round fits just fine and I have shot it using the 50-70 and black powder. The serial # is 41608 and it has US and also a 445 stamped on the buttplate. The sideplate just has SPRINGFIELD stamped on it on an incline toward the muzzle, and it looks like whoever stamped the plate doubled up on the D. I would have to guess that I have a rifle that has been built up out of many different parts, and not by Springfield. Would I be correct on this? I can't find any markings on the stock other than the marks and dings one would expect to find. The patina on the rifle doesn't vary so I suspect It has been in this configuration for a long time.

Thanks for any information Steve
