Help Identifying Trapdoor

Posted by Ken Pepper on Monday, 16 July 2012, at 11:31 a.m.

My neighbors have a trapdoor that was found in the crawlspace of the basement of an old stage coach stop in Pennsylvania they were refurbishing. I am having trouble identifying it as it seems to have all regular rifle characteristics but no sling attachments like a cadet rifle would have.

1863 Springfield lockplate Overall length is 51.85" Barrel length 32.6" 2 bands 18 5/8" apart with "U" on both Breech block 1870/Eagle/Arrows/US Firing proof Box L serial # 32173 on barrel and receiver rear sight deep V front sight 1 1/4" back can find no cartouches no attachments for sling like a cadet rifle would .50 caliber
