Thanks for your reply. I would not know where to look had I not owned the book written by Richard Hosmer (Dick Hosmer here on the forum) “The .58 and .50 Caliber Rifles & Carbines of the Springfield Armory 1865-1872”. The serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver joint, and again on the concealed face of the extractor cam-plate. The extractor cam-plate is held on by the same screw that holds the breechblock, and the screw must be removed in order to see the serial number. According to Dick's book, the barrel serial number and barrel-tang usually match. I was surprised to find that all of my numbers match.
