1873 Springfield History Check

Hi everyone. I was given a Model 1873 Springfield rifle by my father. The serial number is 258827. I know the history of how it came into my family (through my great grandfather in the early 1900's) but wanted to know if anyone can find information about it's life previous to that or just any more information about it? Thanks
