Laurence

Looks like no one has jumped in here. I have been out of town chasing phantom rifles (300 miles & no luck).

491977 was produced July--Sept. 1890.

The barrel would be 32&5/8 inches for a rifle. The Cadet rifle has a 29.6 inch barrel. The carbine barrel is 22 inches long. ANYTHING other than these measurements is not Standard Issue & would indicate that the barrel has been altered.

The proper way to measure the barrel length is to close the Breech Block & insert a rod into the barrel till it contacts the face of the BB. Mark the rod & measure the length.

As for records. There is very little data about issuance of weapons in the 1800's. One of the guys with SRS data may be able to pinpoint a unit but that is about all that can be gathered.
