For a start, take a really close look at the 1878 marking. Particularly the last digit as it is almost certain to be a 3. The UPPW marking is unknown to me. The date of production was during 1884. Measure the barrel (rod down the barrel to the face of the closed breech block). Should be 32.6 inches for a rifle or 29.6 inches for a Cadet model. The U on the barrel bands means "up"; it should be seen as a U when the rifle is vertical, muzzle pointing up. Scroll through this website for photos and descriptions of the various models.
