I have a Model 1884 that has the appearance of a carbine but has no front sight cover and no elevation on the rear sight. The cartouche (strong strike) reads 1893 and the serial no. is 561xxx, which should indicate a 1893 production, but no carbines were made after 1889 as far as I can tell. The barrel is 26" and there is an "A" stamped on the top of the barrel and a "VP" and a "2" below a mark under the VP, on the side of the barrel. Could this be a rifle that was cut down? The stock is certainly a carbine stock.
