In a strong modern bolt-action rifle, using smokeless powder, it is considered OK, even advantageous, to seat the bullet out to touch the rifling, which minimizes "jump".

But, artificially raising the pressure at the moment of ignition (remember BP "explodes" whereas smokeless "burns") by means of a jammed bullet of unknown alloy and obviously too large, in a "weak" action, is not a good idea. You were quite wise to stop when you did (I'm sure the block leverage would have forced it home if you had tried).
