Good thought Stephen. I do recall seeing old flicks with Johnny Reb and Billy yank fighting with trapdoors! I checked the chamber and do not see any sign of a "sleeve" or something that resembles an insert. I know that the Black Dawge bullets (the lead) will not fit in the muzzle end either, so it must be all the way down the length of the barrel. (if that says anything) Also the other four cartridges, that do chamber, seem to be proper 45-70 Brass and the bullets on them are longer than the Black Dawge bullet. (brass is marked U.S.C. Co and W.R.A. Co, all 45-70) Plus all markings on the rifle seem to be in line with the "Collectors Only" book by Poyer and Riesch. So not sure if it is an old prop.

Also, I have not tried any other manufacturer (Remington ect..) yet either.
